This means that Rosetta 2 would actually perform far worse on different ARM hardware - most ARM chips don't support Intel memory ordering, so they wouldn't be able to save that additional conversion cost. When it comes to memory, your M1 isn't emulating x86 - it becomes x86.

This removes a lot of the complexity of emulating the x86 code - all you need to do is translate the instructions to their ARM equivalent, without worrying about adjusting their output to make the following instructions work properly. Rosetta 2 basically turns half of your M1 into an Intel chip - a lot of the memory stuff actually stops running in "ARM" mode and swaps to "Intel" mode whenever it is running translated x86 instructions, using Intel's memory ordering model rather than the ARM one. Not only are the latest Intel Mac's chips 3 years behind in their manufacturing node, giving the M1 a pretty handy efficiency bonus to start, but also Rosetta 2 does some clever stuff under the hood. I imagine it would run more efficiently than on Intel, but that wouldn't really be a surprise. This subreddit is not endorsed or sponsored by Apple Inc.
